More Silliness from the Mid-80s

Along the same lines as yesterday's post...

We then played Johnny Cash singing "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog."

I have no idea why I thought it would be so very funny to pretend that Michael Casselli requested "Dirty Old Egg-Sucking Dog." I didn't even know him that well.

To make matters WORSE, he had actually been listening to the show and CALLED to ask me why on earth I had done that. I am sure my response was just some incoherent giggling.

I'm sure he'd have been wholeheartedly amused. And probably will be soon enough, if he clicks through from Facebook...

Very very funny. Nice to hear both your voices. I can picture you both at WYSO. Michael does have eclectic music tastes.

I was always worried that you would not get enough calls and be bored, so Woody and I would thoughtfully transfer every 5th call to the college switchboard to you. "WYSO one moment"

Ha! Something else we have in common: late-night WYSO radio! We always shut down at midnight, of course, and sometimes there'd be me and several other people breaking various FCC rules about intoxicants in the studio and playing what might generously be called "audio collages" to grateful Wright-Pat airmen who were impaired similarly to us.

One night, an audio engineer friend of mine was up there as I ended my show, and these African guys just...showed up. Very odd. They had instruments, and wanted us to record them. Fortunately, Jon knew what he was doing and quickly set up a bunch of mikes (he'd interned with Walter Carlos, before he became Wendy Carlos) and I got dragooned into playing something, as I remember. It took about two hours, but we wound up with a reel of tape for them to take away. They were very impressed iwth Jon's skills, so they took his address with them. Two years later -- I swear -- Jon got a letter from them. Something off of that reel of tape had become a hit in Kenya!

Sadly, no money in it for us. Or, knowing the Kenyan music biz, for them, either, most likely.
