More Lost in Translation Moments

Today's e-mail from an editor/translator in Egypt:

"Dear Marie, in Cartoon Network magazine in Powerpuff Girls, the Rowdyruff Boys are worried about cooties. Marie, please, what is a cootie?"

Eww, girl (boy) germs! That's universal if you are under the age of 8. A bit tougher to explain to a woman in her early twenties.

I wonder if I should tell her the bit about crossing her fingers...

I had cooties when I was a kid. It was a game where you and the other player threw dice. Each number allowed you to attach a piece of body to what became a plastic insect: you had to get all six legs, you couldn't put in an eye or an antenna until you got the head. The game was called Cooties, that is. I doubt that I had real cooties.

I liked that game! I wonder if it's still out there... yep, here it is.
